British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their courage," Healey commented. "Including them were a great many British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "major assault" on IS targets in Syria, following an assault killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations says IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
